Evil Hour In Columbia by Forrest Hylton Journal Entry 4

Five Comments
1. Columbia rose from the wars that were fought for independence
2. Columbia was one of the nations that had the hardest time making progress out of all of the Latin American nations.
3. Antioquian merchants were making many profits of gold mining.
4. Columbia in 1854 was going to become part of the United States.
5. Most of Columbia's population lives in the subtropic mountainous areas.

Four Question
1. Why was Columbia disunited?
2. What was the "Age of Capital"?
3. Why did the export of tobacco and quinine reach its peak when the US Civil War was going on?
4. Why was differentiation of land such a huge part of politics?

Three Words
1. Fiscal: of or relating to government revenue
2. Quinine: used as a tonic and 3 as an antimalarial drug 
3. Entrench: established so firmly that change is difficult or unlikely

Two Literary terms
1. Simile: "We should be treated like citizens of a republic not like the slaves of sultan" (Hylton 15).
2. Metaphor: " The rule was an intricate quilt of local rivalries at the micro-level of small communities or township, cheek by jowl within each region" (Hylton 17).

One Sentence
1.  Columbia s having trouble establishing a form of government.
