Evil Hour In Columbia by Forrest Hylton Journal Entry 6

Five Comments
1. Gaitan was assassinated in 1948.
2. The period known as La violencia began after Gaitan was killed.
3. There was conflict on going between liberals and conservatives.
4.  Power switched between the Conservatives and the Liberals.
5. When the Liberals were in power they used intimidation, police violence and fraud.

Four Questions
1. What were some of Gaitan's contradictions?
2. Why was Gaitan assassinated?
3. How did Gomez come to power?
4. Was Gomez the only dictator that Columbia had?


Three Words
1. Bipartisan: of or involving an agreement or cooperation of two political parties that usually oppose each other
2. Simmering: stay just below boiling point while being heated
3. Fascist: an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization

Two Literary Terms
1. Metaphor: " When Conservative rule came to an end in 1930, tensions long simmering in the countryside began to explode" (Hylton 36).
2. Personification: "...Gomez was seen at the time, and has been since, as a fascist demagogue, driving his party to financial extremes and plunging the country into civil war" (Hylton 37).

One Sentence
1. There was a lot of violence in Columbia because of the tension that existed between the Conservatives and the liberals.
